Horseback Riding in Uruguay

Criollos Wild Land

Overview

Join us on a horse journey into the most natural and diverse area in Uruguay, through the UNESCO East Wetlands Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar sites, discovering the best highlights of this unique terrain. In Rocha, both the gaucho and the traditional fishermen cultures mix in a unique way. This is a special horse adventure to discover this land and create a genuine link its the people and their horses.

Pasture and wetlands, hill ranges, palm tree forests and endless beaches, natural protected areas and small fishermen villages are the scenery for this tour. Ride beautifully cared for Uruguayan criollos and mestizos horses, on very comfortable Uruguayan saddles, along low populated areas where nature and horses are the main attraction. As this is a real horse adventure, you will camp with the horses for some nights, resulting in a greater connection with nature as gauchos have. The campfire, Truco, and mate will be present every day, as well as many different experiences with the horses crossing various landscapes through roadless lands.

Five nights are spent camping in tents with inflatable sleeping mats and sleeping bags provided. The other nights are spent in double/twin rooms with private bathrooms.

The fresh meat, seafood and vegetables are first class. All meals from lunch on the first day through lunch on the final day are included. Drinks are not included.

  • Overview:
The criollo horses are well trained, steady and are ready to move out at a good gallop on command. The horses have been bred and raised on local ranches. They are strong, fit, and well behaved animals. The style of riding is western and the horses respond to neck reining. Traditional South American saddles and bridles are utilized. Their thick sheepskin covers make them comfortable for long hours of riding. Saddle strings are attached to carry raincoats, water bottles, cameras, and binoculars. English saddles are available with advance notice. The gauchos accompanying the ride handle all the tacking up and are extremely helpful.

Valle de Bravo, Mexico is a great riding destination, with or without the Monarch butterflies. What makes this ride so special is the hospitality and the food. The hosts are wonderful and gracious, their home, our home, is very comfortable and the food was terrific. The high point was sitting on a rock overlooking a beautiful valley, in the middle of a wilderness while eating a gourmet 5 course meal, which was cooked over an open fire. I would like to come back just to relax, enjoy the hospitality and the food.
