Horseback Riding in Italy

Explore Tuscany

Overview

Offered by the same hosts of the Tuscan Villages & Vintages ride and the Relaxed Tuscan program, this itinerary offers riding and sightseeing that combines the two. With five half day rides and one full day of riding, you have plenty of time to explore the nearby area by horseback, but also time for relaxation and sightseeing. You have the option for lessons, which have professional attention that has been appreciated by guests throughout the years. Full board is included, with outstanding meals made from local products.

The guesthouse is an 18th century Tuscan farmhouse that has been renovated to be comfortable but to keep the original character. There are several private apartments with bathrooms and a kitchen for families or groups.

This ride allows ample opportunity to sample the well-known Tuscan cuisine and delight in “Italian style” picnic lunches.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Sunday

Arrive at Montevarchi Terranuova station for a 5:30pm pickup and transfer to the farm. Enjoy a welcome drink at 7pm and dinner at 8:30pm in the elegantly restored 18th century Tuscan farmhouse that will be your home for the week.

Day 2

Monday

Half day riding to the Roman Abbey of Badia d’Ombrone. Lunch at the riding center and in the afternoon riding to the neighboring the medieval Castello di Montalto for a visit.

Day 3

Tuesday

Half day riding in the morning at the medieval village of Montebenichi. Enjoy lunch at the riding center and in the afternoon visit the medieval town of Pienza by car. Pienza is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site of great universal value .

Day 4

Wednesday

A full day of riding on rolling hills and landscapes that take you to Arceno, a centuries old property, where you will breathe in history and beauty. In the heart of Tuscany in the Sienese Chianti the wine farm extends for more than a thousand hectares. Have a wine tasting in a fantastic location that has a view of the olive groves. There are also two tree-lined avenues of grand cypresses that, given their great value and uncommon beauty, are protected by law. Then stop to visit and maybe have an aperitif in the medieval village of San Gusme (11th century) and then onto the Etruscan
site of Campi, where we have a picnic. The panoramic view is magnificent as it  spans from Monti del Chianti to Siena and then to Monte Amiata. On the journey home, you will again pass by part of the Arceno estate.

Day 5

Thursday

Half day riding in the morning followed by lunch at the farm. In the afternoon you’ll visit the Castle of Brolio in heart of the Chianti Classico, owned from medieval times by the Ricasoli family. Have a wine tasting before stopping for a aperitive at the Village of Villa a Sesta with a stunning view on the chianti’s hills.

Day 6

Friday

Half day riding with a picnic at Rapale. Then go up an ancient Etruscan road which, on sunny days, has an amazing view of the valley, the Chianti hills and Siena. Pass through the village of Rapale, probably the last example of a non-renovated ancient village. Have lunch home at ththe farm and in the afternoon have time to relax at the spa of Rapolano terme or San Giovanni.

If there is bad weather you can instead visit the Etruscan Town Cortona, famous also for producing superb Sirah wines and for the book “Under the Tuscan Sun” written by Frances Mayes.

Day 7

Saturday

Half a day riding in the morning at the monastery Borgo Monastero, through forests, olive groves and vineyards. Lunch is at the riding centre and in the afternoon we go by car to the city of outstanding beauty: Siena – by far the best well preserved medieval town in Italy and also famous for the Palio horse race.

Day 8

Sunday

Enjoy breakfast and bid goodbye to your hosts.

The Relaxed Tuscan ride was absolutely perfect for us - riding in the morning and afternoons open, visiting the nearby Tuscan villages, vineyards and sights of antiquity. The hosts made the experience very special and I cannot think of anything that would have improved this ride for me.
