Horseback Riding in France

Jewels of the Loire – Chambord to Chenonceau

Overview

France is ideally suited for riding tours and is the country where the idea got its start and is most highly developed. Horseback riding in Loire valley is particularly well-suited, as the countryside in many places is most attractive and comparatively unspoiled.

Rights-of-way have been well maintained so that horsemen can usually find appropriate trails and there is very little necessity to take paved roads. Spectacular castles, walled towns and ancient monasteries are everywhere. Here you tour at least one castle daily to fully understand the rich history. French food and wine are justly famous and you will have every opportunity to savor them with appetites made keener by a day in the saddle.

In the centuries before the French Revolution the Loire Valley was the scene of an unprecedented flowering of culture where French kings and nobles vied with one another to build the most magnificent structures and to decorate them exquisitely. There are wonderful opportunities for canters through some of the old hunting preserves of the French nobility, and you follow tracks through picturesque countryside of bucolic farmland and vineyards. The accommodations and food are wonderful, the trails and scenery unforgettable, and the opportunity to do it all on horseback makes this truly unique experience.

You will be staying at four different chateaux during the ride.

Whether dining in a local restaurant or chateau, meals will be a sampling of wonderful French cuisine and wines.

Breakfast and the evening meals will be in each night’s accommodations and offer some of the region’s best cuisine. Lunches are usually picnics and may consist of pâté, ham, salads, cold meats, cheeses, fresh breads, wine and dessert, or in the restaurant of the chateau you are visiting. Your final dinner will be in a wonderful local restaurant.

  • Overview:
The mixed breed horses used on this ride are well suited to their environment. These hardy Arab, Selle Francais, Thoroughbred, French Trotter and Spanish cross horses stand 14-15.5 hh. They are chosen for their temperament, hardiness and comfort. Saddle pads with small pockets are used. English saddles are used along with a few trekking saddles.
  • Horse Breeds:
    Hardy mixed breeds
  • Trip Pace:
    moderate
  • Tack:
    English
  • Weight limit:

It is not necessary to be an expert rider, however, riders are expected to be experienced and comfortable at all paces, including posting (rising trots), and half-seat canters, and are responsible for grooming and tacking their horses during the week. Trail riding experience will be useful (riding days will vary from 3 1/2–4 ½ hours per day).

Plan to be in Chambord in time to arrive at your accommodations by 7:00pm. Your room will be ready by 4:00pm. The train from Paris Austerlitz to Blois is about 2 hours, or you can take the train from Paris Montparnasse, changing at Tours saint Pierre des Corps for Blois. Transfer by taxi from Blois station to Hotel le Relais de Chambord for about 50 Euro, payable direct in cash only. Or you can make a reservation for a shuttle from CDG airport to the chateau. At Hotel le Relais de Chambord there will be a discussion of the week ahead precisely at 7:00pm, followed by dinner.
After the ride transfer from the final accommodation to Amboise railway station can be at any time for about 15 Euro. A taxi to Saint Pierre des Corps station is also possible for about 50 euro. Your guide can assist you with arrangements.

The price includes six night's accommodations, meals, horse, tack, guide, entrance fees for scheduled visits and tax. Wine (two glasses) is included with meals, but not spirits.
The price does not include additional drinks, special wines, transfers, or gratuities.
Transfers between Blois and Hotel le Relais de Chambord on the first night, and your return to the Amboise train station on the last day are at your expense. Transfers on Sundays are more expensive.
If the minimum of 5 participants is not reached the ride can proceed but will require the payment of an additional small group supplement.

The currency of France and most of Europe is the Euro. Due to frequent fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates, it is advisable to contact a financial institution prior to departure for current rates. All major credit cards are accepted in France, and ATM’s are readily accessible. It is recommended that some Euros be carried for gratuities and small purchases, as it may be difficult to exchange currency during the ride.

It was a wonderful experience, not only for the horses and riding, which was excellent, but for the journey to heart of the Loire, including such wonderful experiences of the local people, history and culture. Our guide was wonderful in every way. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and certainly hope to do another ride one day with him. Thank you for a most memorable holiday and experience.
