Horseback Riding in Sweden

Scandinavian Summer

Overview

Offered in July and August, this horseback riding vacation in Sweden allows you to experience the midnight sun. Based above the Arctic Circle, the 7 day trip brings you through some of the most remote Nordic landscapes of Swedish Lapland in the area of Kebnekaise, the country’s highest mountain. A sense of adventure is imperative as you set out from the base farm on hardy Icelandic Horses and camp in the mountain wilderness. Even if it is not a wilderness per se – people have lived here for 8,000 years – it is a cultural landscape that changes very slowly. There is something enchantingly wild and beautiful about the seemingly endless landscape. Your hosts have their roots in the local Sami community; the indigenous population whose ancestral connection to this land is based on the migratory journeys following reindeer herds, which you may glimpse. You can imagine their way of life as you sit around a campfire eating the food that was prepared over the open fire before sleeping in the communal Sami style tent. Other nights are spent in shared cabins or guesthouses, and each day is spent on horseback, when you’ll marvel at the strength and smoothness of your Icelandic mount as you cover the paces and the 9-15 miles daily.

Your first and last nights will be spent at the Icleandic Horse farm, where there are two small guesthouses with room for up to 5-6 guests each. Each house offers a common area and shared bathrooms. The rooms are simple but comfortable. Wifi is available.

Nights 2 and 5 are spent in sleeping bags in a Sami style tent.

Nights 3 and 4 are spent in shared cabins.

Meals are homecooked and feature local staples of reindeer and moose meat, white fish from nearby rivers, lingonberries and hearty potato and vegetable sides.
Alcoholic drinks are not included but you are welcome to bring your own.

  • Overview:
There is a herd of about 30 Icelandic Horses on the farm. They are all known very well by your guides, selected carefully as good trail and lesson horses. They are all easy to handle and be around and you will likely ride several different horses during the course of your stay.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Kiruna

Arrive to Kiruna by plane or train for a short transfer to the Icelandic Horse farm shown to your guesthouse. Depending on what time you arrive, you may want to add lunch, which is served at around 1pm and not included in the trip cost. You’ll have time to visit the horses in their paddocks or stalls and catch a glimpse of the Scandinavian Mountains where you’ll be riding the rest of the week. This evening the group will enjoy a 3 course dinner in the dining area attached to the barn.

Day 2

Intro ride by the Kalix river

After breakfast you’ll pack up be vehicle for your first ride. During the tour there will be a pack horse carrying the food and supplies, but you’ll be carrying your own gear in saddlebags on your horse. Your guides will give suggestions of how to pack. The horses are trailered and you’ll be assigned a good match for your ride on the south side of the Kalix river. You’ll go through forest and start climbing the mountains for the first fantastic view.  The Scandinavian Mountains are home to the Kebnekaise massif, the highest peak in Sweden.

Tonight you’ll stay in a Sami style tepee tent called a lávvu, where you will sleep in sleeping bags around the fireplace, where you can make a fire if desired.

Day 3

To Ratekjokk, a Sami community

The next morning you’ll pack your things and ride over the bare mountain and  down to the small Sami settlement called Ratekjokk, where you will stay for two nights in a cabin. The owners of the tour company have their roots in Ratekjokk so this place is really “home.” They have a few houses there, a sauna right by a small river and the horses have lots of pasture there

The Sami are the indigenous people of the area, whose culture revolves around reindeer. A Sami community is an economical and administrative community that cares for the reindeer in the area. There are about fifty Sami communities in Sweden and the reindeer herding area covers around half of the area of Sweden. Just a small part of the Sami population are members of a Sami community. Leaváš and Girjas are Sami communities in the mountain area. Here in the west close to the Norwegian border is where the reindeer normally are in the summer and in the lower mountains during autumn and spring. In winter time they are more east in the forest land.

Enjoy the sauna and dinner this evening before overnighting in the cabin.

Day 4

Tour from Ratekjokk

Ride from Ratekjokk for the day and return for second night in the cabins.

Day 5

Mountain ride

Ride out from Ratekjokk today for another night in the tents. You’ll see some of the imposing mountain ridges, deep sculpted valleys, high boulder fields and beautiful pine primeval forests that are typical of this area, and perhaps some reindeer.

Day 6

Return to farm

Your final day from the mountains will bring you back to the starting point and to the farm. You’ll feel the satisfaction of completing your wilderness ride, and of a hot shower tonight! Your final dinner as a group to be enjoyed on the farm.

I felt the trip was better than advertised. Our guide is a genuinely nice person who clearly enjoys what he does. The trip was professionally organized, relaxed and not pretentious. The food and wine were excellent, likewise the accommodation. The horses were very well trained and cared for, they all could move. Rides started out understandably with some long walks, but as the horses (and riders) loosened up there was plenty of trotting and cantering (on our 3rd day one of the canters was about a mile long). We did get to gallop  (total blast) on the beach and on the way back from the beach. Tours of vineyards were truly excellent.and very informative. All the guides were clearly passionate about wine and generous with their time. There were multiple wine tastings and overall I felt it added another dimension to the trip. Very highly recommended.
